VIRUS WELCOME DAMPHOUSSE, MITCHELL TO TEAM The Virus added two players to their line-up this offseason, playmaking centerman Vincent Damphousse and gritty young defenseman Willie Mitchell. Mitchell was picked up for 2.4 million, and Damphousse garnered the large sum of $5,846,000. That makes him the highest paid player on the club.
"Hey, everyone in the free agent auction seemed to be going for way above their worth. I mean, Bret Hedican is gonna make five million a year? You're kidding me," said Virus GM Dave Hodgson. "When Chris Drury can make ten million per season, Damphousse's price is a bargain."
Hodgson was also happy with the pick-up of twenty-four-year-old Willie Mitchell.
"He's a firebrand, the type of player who goes all out and will stand up for his teammates. I'm confident he'll be a big presence on this team for years to come."
LECAVALIER TO SIT FOR FOUR GAMES Speedy Virus centerman Vincent Lecavalier has been suspended for four games for a cross-check on Venom goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin that will put the netminder in the press box for two to four weeks. Lecavalier leads the charge this season with seven goals in ten games.
"Vince isn't a dirty player, and that was an uncharacteristic move on his part. We'll miss his offense for those four games."
The Virus will call upon Oleg Kvasha, who has taken on a checking role this year, to center the second line with Brian Rolston and Ruslan Fedotenko until Lecavalier returns.
